Just Show Up

My first year in college I had to attend leadership classes and workshops as a contingency for a scholarship. A lot of those classes were geared toward business or administration students, but there is something that I remember from the very first one which I have found myself using frequently-- especially lately. I wanted to share it with you. I hope you don't mind.

During the introduction of that course, and college in general the president of the school came to our classroom to welcome us and lead the first lesson. He talked about his personal life and experiences, said that he hadn't really thought he would amount to much of anything. He hadn't been a great student in high school, hadn't gone out of his way to do a whole lot; but then he got this advice: "just show up".

I don't remember the details of the rest of his story, but the point he made was very strong. When you thinking about doing something new or even something that's not new but that's also not comfortable it can be really overwhelming. Just thinking about all the unknowns and all your possible inadequacy's can make you not want to follow through with it because: What if you aren't good enough? What if you do the wrong thing? What if you don't know what to do?

He said, don't worry about all of that. Just show up.

Just show up.

You don't have to be ready. You don't have to have it all figured out or know where you are going to go or what you are going to do, just go. When you arrive you don't have to do anything except BE there.

When you show up to things whether you feel ready or not, magic happens. You learn. You expand. Opportunities appear. You don't know what's there until you get there, but if you don't get there, then you'll never know.

I've found this to be true in my life too. Things don't always work out "perfectly". I don't always do much of anything, but if I go somewhere new then I know that its there and next time its a little easier. Usually what has ended up happening is that if I keep showing up, even if I just stand in the background, I start to learn things and each time I get a little more comfortable and learn a little bit more. Then one day I realize I've changed, just because I kept showing up.

We change our environment by being in it.

We change ourselves that way too.

Life isn't about being perfect. It's just about being present.

The rest will come in time. :)

Have a great day, Jaime

P.S. This applies to relationships as well. Sometimes we don't know what to do or say when someone tells us something or is going through something. It's okay not to know, but just being there with them can convey a whole lot of love and support. It matters.
